Le chteau Malartic Lagravire est connu aussi bien pour ses rouges que ses blancs, tous deux d'une grande qualit et d'une renomme mondiale. Compos part gale de merlot et de cabernet-sauvignon (complts par le cabernet-franc et le petit verdot), il exhibe les qualits des deux cpages. La rondeur, un fruit intense et une bouche opulente sont la marque du merlot tandis que le cabernet lui confre une jolie structure tannique ainsi que la tension ncessaire un bel quilibre en bouche.

Histoire du Chteau

Le domaine de Lagravire a toujours t reconnu pour tre un terroir qualitatif dans les graves. Hippolyte Maurs de Malartic, grand serviteur des rois de France, acquiert le domaine la fin du XVIIIe sicle. En 1850, Madame Arnaud Ricard achte le domaine Lagravire et y accole le nom de Malartic. La famille Marly, descendant des Ricard prend la direction du domaine en 1947 et l'administre jusqu'en 1990. Jouissant d'une grande renomme depuis le dbut du XX e , le Chteau Malartic-Lagravire est l'un des seuls six crus classs, la fois en blanc et en rouge, lors du classement des Graves de 1953.

En 1996, Alfred-Alexandre et Michle Bonnie rachtent le chteau. Une vaste opration de mtamorphose est entreprise ds 1997 par le couple belge.
Aujourd'hui
Leurs enfants, Jean-Jacques et Sverine, les rejoignent successivement la gestion du chteau en 2003 et 2006. Les investissements de 1997 sont dignes du magnifique patrimoine viticole du chteau et permettent encore de nos jours de produire un grand vin de graves.

Sixty percent of the crop made it into this grand vin this year. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, and it was aged in 45% new French oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Malartic Lagraviere features baked blackberries, mulberries, pencil lead and spice cake with hints of chocolate box, menthol and cassis. The medium-bodied palate is plush, soft, juicy and expressive with a spicy finish.

This has plenty of rich fruit, in the dark-cherry and cassis zone. The oak is nicely played into earthy accents, too. The tannins are smooth-grained and open out smoothly on the finish, delivering creamy, ripe berries. Drink or hold.

Notation Wine Spectator

Quite ripe, with succulent plum, cassis and raspberry pte de fruit flavors mixed together, lined with licorice and anise details, showing a well-integrated apple wood note on the finish, backed by a light scoring of tar. Exhibits lots of compact energy, so this should unwind nicely in the cellar. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2022 through 2035.

I was able to taste the 2017 Chteau Malartic-Lagravire two times and it showed consistently on both occasions. Sporting a deep, inky color as well as terrific notes of blackcurrants, black cherries, tobacco leaf, and bouquet garni, it's medium-bodied, moderately concentrated, charming, and impeccably balanced. It's going to drink nicely in its youth yet keep for a decade or more as well.

Dark cherry red. Dark and dusty on the nose stone dust as well as a scented peppery character. Tastes a little charry on the palate, firm compact tannins but smooth. Currently more appealing on the nose than on the palate.

Notation Quarin

Couleur sombre, intense et belle. Nez fruit, mais discret. Caressant l'attaque, suave au dveloppement, trs fruit et tendre, le vin volue savoureux et un peu discret dans son expression gnrale. Longueur moyenne.
